What Telehealth Is

Telehealth allows a patient and healthcare professional to communicate from different locations using electronic communication technology. Depending on the service, telehealth may include live video, audio, electronic messaging, or other approved technologies.

Benefits

  • Convenient access to care without traveling to an office.
  • Ability to participate from an appropriate private location.
  • Potentially easier continuity of follow-up care.

Potential Limitations and Risks

  • Technology failures, poor internet connections, or audio/video interruptions.
  • Reduced ability to perform certain in-person physical assessments.
  • Privacy risks if you participate from a location where others can hear or see the session.
  • Telehealth may not be clinically appropriate for every situation.

Where You Must Be Located

You must accurately tell the provider where you are physically located at the time of the appointment. Telehealth services can only be provided when the clinician is appropriately authorized to provide care in the jurisdiction where the patient is located.

How to Prepare

  • Choose a quiet, private, well-lit location.
  • Use a stable internet connection and a charged device.
  • Test your camera, microphone, and speakers before the visit.
  • Have your medication list and relevant information available.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery during the appointment.

Privacy During Telehealth

Reasonable safeguards are used to protect telehealth communications. Patients should also take reasonable steps to protect privacy on their side, such as using a private space and a trusted device/network when possible.

Technology Failure

If the connection is interrupted, the provider or practice may attempt to reconnect or contact you using the information on file. If the session cannot continue safely or effectively, it may need to be rescheduled or an alternative method may be discussed.

Emergency Planning

At the beginning of or during a telehealth visit, the provider may confirm your current physical location and emergency contact information. This information may be used when necessary to respond to a serious safety concern.

When Telehealth Is Not Appropriate

Telehealth is not a substitute for emergency services. The provider may recommend in-person evaluation, emergency care, or a different level of care when clinically appropriate.
